BIRD WATCHING AT CHEPU RIVER WETLANDS

CHEPU Wetlands are nesting place of local birds therefore, a great place for bird watching.   

By kayak on Puntra River, boat to the Laguna Coluco, on the Sendero de Chile trails, or from the Mirador de Chepu.

 

GREAT VARIETY OF BIRDS

Cocoi Herons, Great Egrets, Ringed Kingfisher, Patagonian Sierra Finch, Long tailed Meadowlark, Austral Blackbird, Chilean Swalow,Tufted Tit-Tyrant, White Crested Elaenia, Fire eyed Diucon, Spectacled Tyrant,  Green backed Firecrown, Slender-Billed Parakeet, Magellanic Snipe, Hudsonian Wimbrel, Souther lapwing, Red Gartered Coot, Plumbeus Rail, Peregrine Falcon, Souther Caracara, Spectacled Duck, Andean Duck, Chiloe Wigeon, Yellow Billed Pintail, Black faced Ibis, Neotropic Cormorant, Magellan Cormorant, Great Grebe and many more.

BIRD WATCHING BY KAYAK IS IDEAL

Just relax and enjoy the possibility to get close to birds, in a silent way, so good pictures can be taken while kayaking.

CHEPU WETLANDS NESTING AREA

At Chepu Wetlands you can observe up to 80 different varieties of birds (terrestrial & acuatic).   Some of them are endemic, original from this area.



 

CHEPU DURING LAST GLACIATION

During the last glaciations, app. 20.000 years ago, Chepu and the surrounding area was not covered by the glaciers, leaving the area as the cradle of flora and fauna, isolated by thousand of years.  For this reason this area has unique endemic fauna and flora.



 

FAUNA DIVERSITY

 Looking for fauna in Chepu area, we have found a wide variety:

  • 43 species of aquatic birds
  • 28 species of terrestrial birds
  • 7 species of mammals
  • 7 species of amphibious
  • 11 species of mollusks, crustaceous and fishes.
