QUINCHAO ISLAND

Quinchao Island, has two main towns: Achao & Curaco de Velez

Curaco de Velez, (means stone water) a small town with very old, large, wooden houses with a great variety of “tejuelas” (wooden tails – some old ones in alerce).   

Achao, the largest town in this Island, with a population of app.2.500, was founded in 1743 as a missionary center of the Jesuists.

DALCAHUE

Dalcahue, (means place of “dalcas” = tied wooden canoes built in the past by the chonos) a colorful place facing the Dalcahue channel and Quinchao Island.   With app. 3500 inhabitants, small wooden houses painted with bright colors, it is known by the handcrafts Fair on Sundays (great affordable wool “ponchos” and sweaters), and the cookeries by the channel (a good and inexpensive sample of local food), where you can try a typical Curanto : cooked digging a hole in the ground with hot stones covered with nalca leaves and smoked pork, chicken, seafood, sausage, milcao, chapalele, covered on top with leaves and grass.  A must to try!
